English students showcase IDEA Grant projects: English undergraduate students Hannah Justus, Alexa Kellenberger, Sabine Nemours, Ashley Rosado, and Zoe Zirlin all won 2019 IDEA Grants.


Alexa Kellenberger: Moral Inheritance: "Hereditary"’s Ancestry in Dante: The second-year English major helped to track an archive called "Dante Today," which compiles outside contemporary references to Dante within the archive.


Zoe Zirlin: The Big Lie(s): A Quantitative Analysis of the Visual Imagery Employed to Propagandize Nazism: Zoe Zirlin, who is earning a minor in English, encourages all students to reach out to professors at FSU with their research ideas: "It really is a ‘you get out what you put in’ situation here."


Sabine Nemours: The Female Backbone of Immigrant Communities: The senior English major in the Literature, Media and Culture Program worked closely with English Professor Maxine Montgomery on her IDEA Grant project in addition to research on African-American literature.


Ashley Rosado: “Imposter Syndrome and Machismo: A Case Study on Latinas Navigating the Tech Startup Industry”: The junior English major says her research revealed that Latinas in the technology field tend to support each other when it comes to advancing in the technology industry.


Hannah Justus: “Determining the Value of Virtual Reality Technology in Autism Intervention”: The sophomore English major's research is a literature review focusing on autism intervention through virtual reality. This study allows Justus to do research that engages her interest in both psychology and literature.


English undergraduate Demetrius Winn strives for social justice and human rights for all: FSU student Demetrius Winn won the 2019 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Book Stipend award to acknowledge his excellence in the classroom and his activist work on campus


Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Book Stipend Award winners describe his impact on their education: Florida State University undergraduate students Ksamesvari Edwards and Erika LeFlouria, both with ties to the English department, won the award in early 2020.


David Advent and Erin Christopher win top awards : David Advent and Erin Christopher excelled throughout their undergraduate careers as English majors, so capping the experience by winning two major department awards is no surprise. Even if both students weren't quite sure what they won at first.


FSU English Undergraduates showcase their IDEA Grant Projects: Four undergraduate English majors—David Advent, Talise Burton, Colby Blackwill, and Erin Christopher—won 2018 IDEA Grants for their research projects, developed under the supervision of English department faculty members. FSU's Center for Undergraduate Research and Academic Engagement and the Office of the President sponsors the annual funding of the projects. Each student presented his or her project at the 2018 President's Showcase of Undergraduate Research Excellence.

Erin Christopher: IDEA Grant winner for production of eight-episode miniseries: When people find out a college student is earning an English degree, they likely think that student is focused strictly on historical or modern literature, creative writing, or rhetoric and composition. Most of those people probably have not stepped foot in an English department in many years, though.

Colby Blackwill: His IDEA Grant research explores life after Chernobyl: Florida State University undergraduates who win IDEA Grants select a faculty supervisor to guide and mentor them through the research and completion of their project. Senior English major Colby Blackwill chose English Professor Jimmy Kimbrell, and Kimbrell has the highest praise for Blackwill and his academic excellence.

Talise Burton: Her IDEA Grant sparks development of a course on creative entrepreneurship: Undergraduates at Florida State are familiar with the process of scouring course offerings and looking for classes they want to add to their academic schedules. Talise Burton, a senior majoring in English, decided she wanted to build one of those courses for students to consider.

David Advent: His IDEA Grant research dives deeper into works of Thomas Hardy: Reading an author’s works allows a person only so much insight into what the author was thinking during the writing of the books. To gain a better understanding and more awareness of English novelist Thomas Hardy and his novels, Florida State University English major David Advent recently immersed himself in the Victorian realist’s environment.
