Modern British Novel
Robert Stilling
WMS 309
This course surveys an eclectic mix of British fiction from 1900 to the present, including novels by Joseph Conrad, Ford Madox Ford, Virginia Woolf, Elizabeth Bowen, Kazuo Ishiguro, and Bernardine Evaristo. We will address innovations in narrative form and genre from modernism to the present, question representations of British identity at home and abroad, examine issues of race and sexuality, and consider the novel's broader relation to histories of imperialism, war, global migration, and Britain’s changing status as a world power.
