ENC 4212 Fall 2017 Bruce Bickley
A cohort hands-on writing practicum offered as ENC 4212 for undergraduates and as ENC 5217 for graduate students. Meets Weds nights fall and spring and Mon and Weds nights summer B term. Taken as ENC 5217, the workshop counts as a stand-alone elective or can apply to English's 12-hour Graduate Certificate in Publishing and Editing. ENC 5217 is open to students from any academic department and from the community (state agencies, businesses, and independent writers). Both 4212 and 5217 focus on improving writing and editing proficiency across various genres. Texts for 4212 and 5217: Amy Einsohn's The Copyeditor's Handbook (2011) and Editing Manuscripts, Documents, Reports, and Articles, an 80-page booklet from Target Copy prepared by the instructor. Students in 4212 and 5217 also develop real-world professional writing and editing client projects--on and off campus, hard-copy and online. Additionally, students can choose to work on their own research and writing projects. Among other genres, these projects may include creative nonfiction, conference paper drafts; selections from honors theses, master's theses, or dissertations; policy and procedure writing; reports; commercial and academic magazine and journal articles; and a variety of internship projects. The instructor helps students find client projects on campus, in the community, and online. The workshop also incorporates a rigorous professional refresher on grammar, punctuation, and usage; writing mechanics and copyediting practices; developmental editing; and instruction in active-voice writing and editing.
