ENG 3310 Fall2024 - Schultz

When we say “all’s fair in love and war” we’re connecting two seemingly polar opposites. What students will question through this class is how different—if at all—a love story is from a war story. We will tackle problems that arise in the larger field of genre studies: conventions and patterns, and stories that bend and altogether break genre definition. We will also explore what it means to tell a love story or a war story, and why these types of stories are so important to tell. We’ll look at contemporary and classic love and war movies, documentaries, and mini-series episodes, as well as secondary texts to inform and refract our viewings.
