Introduction to Fiction
Sarah Robinson
This course is an introduction to the central techniques of fiction and related analytical concepts. Through the examination of a diverse array of novels and short stories from the nineteenth through twenty-first centuries, we will learn to identify craft elements (form, narrative voice, plot, setting, characterization, etc.), explore the way they work in concert with theme, and ultimately consider how these works connect to the broader culture through a variety of theoretical lenses. Classwork will include close reading, discussions, written assignments, and presentations.
