ENL 3334 Spring 2024
This course is designed to introduce students to some of the major works of William Shakespeare, as well as criticism and performances of those texts. Students will develop their skills in scansion and close reading for early modern verse and prose. Students will also discover theatrical practices both past and present and how they affect our understanding of dramatic texts. We will use genre as a guide in our explorations, moving through the sonnets, tragedy, comedy, history, romance/ tragicomedy, and the more nebulous "problem play." Students will learn different tools for approaching Shakespeare’s works and their legacies.
This course satisfies the pre-1800 requirement.
