Article & Essay Technique: Creative Nonfiction
Ashleah Wimberly

We all have experience with telling “true” stories - or at least stories that are true to our individual experiences, anyway. Most of the everyday tales we tell are told to explain a particular happening in our lives to another person, such as telling your best friend about your day or explaining why you can’t submit a paper to an instructor. Other stories help us make sense of events or to describe why something matters to us. This section of ENC 3310 approaches nonfiction writing as an inherently creative act - one that seeks to explore and understand the world around us and the places, people, and events that slant our experiences of it. With that definition in mind, we will study the theory and craft of what Lee Gutkind describes as “true stories, well told” - better known as Creative Nonfiction.
