Understanding Literary History II
Barry J. Faulk

This course approaches the study of modern literary history through the comparative analysis of modern literary genres, including the genres of ‘weird fiction’ and ‘hard boiled’ or ‘noir’ fiction. Our reading list includes stories by Algernon Blackwood, H.P. Lovecraft, Chester Himes, Dorothy Hughes, and Dashiell Hammett. We’ll also read narratives that contemplate the end of literary history, including Yoko Ogawa’s The Memory Police and Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. Note: This is a Literature Gateway and Core Requirement course.
