Literature of the South: Haunted by Race, Gender and Violence
Diane Roberts

We will explore a variety of texts from and about the American South, with special attention to how racial divisions have shaped not only one region but the entire nation. Students will be expected to read and comprehend at a very high level (this is an advanced course and will be taught as such) and produce sophisticated, erudite, clear, and intellectually-rigorous writing. Writers covered will include William Faulkner, Zora Neale Hurston, Natasha Tretheway, Eudora Welty, and Randall Kenan, among others.

This course meets the requirement for Genre.
