CRW 4120 Spring 2024 - Howard - Section 0007

This course is designed to provide a space for students to develop fiction in a workshop environment. We will look at Charles Baxter's notes on subtext and staging in short fiction, considering what story elements are told directly and what elements are implied. Students will begin the semester writing short exercises that will support the development of two workshop stories, a prompt workshop submission, and one work of flash fiction. This combination of pieces will allow students to explore variations in their voices and approaches. The writers should leave the course with a more concise set of questions to consider as they develop new and existing work. Through our questions and discussions, each writer will be encouraged to provide quality feedback and to evaluate the critiques received from others.
