Science Fiction: the Technological Imaginary
Barry J. Faulk

We will focus on science fiction narratives about technology and consider whether technology is the cure or the cause of all our ills (for what it's worth, Plato thought it was both). Along the way, we’ll consider how narratives of technological emergence help us imagine new ways of working, creating, hating, loving, and living. Our course reading will include fiction by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Jack London, Charles Yu, Samuel Delany, Emily St. John Mandel, and Kazuo Ishiguro. This course counts as a 2000+Level English Elective Requirement.
