Intro to English Studies: Language, Literature, and the Religion of Art
Thomas Cowan

Intro to English Studies helps students conceptualize what it means to be an English major. It reviews the history of the discipline, current practices in study of language and literature, and alternative forms of writing and media made possible by modern technology. It also helps students to acquire skills that will be useful in other courses. Students will learn analysis, drafting, workshopping, and revision, utilize the concepts and forms of theses and counterpoints, and develop professional vocabulary. This class is intended to prepare students to be English majors, to show how English studies can be used both in college and in their career choices, and to expose them to the pleasures of reading and writing as a way to explore truth and beauty. There will be creative assignments (poetry, prose, and oration), and scholarly assignments (essays and reviews), with an emphasis on critical theories and text technologies. Fulfills a "core course" requirement for all English major tracks.
