LIT 2000 Spring 2024
This course surveys a wide range of global, twentieth century literature and culture with the aim of investigating topics such as the Anthropocene, diaspora, humanism, and in a broad sense, how authors and artists negotiate humanity's relation to their environments. Students will explore these topics and others through close reading of key literary elements such as plot, character, setting, genre, and figurative language. Our explorations will be informed by critical insights drawn from ecocriticism, feminist discourses, postcolonial studies, modernist studies, and other theoretical frameworks. The course provides a groundwork in literary types for non-majors and is also strongly recommended as a preparation for upper-level (3000- or 4000-level) coursework in the field.
