Introduction to Literature: Genre Bending Literature
Sarah Destin
This course examines the rise of hybrid forms in literature with an emphasis on the intersection of fiction and creative non-fiction. We will use our reading as a jumping-off place for discussions on the popularity of hybridity in our current cultural moment, the role of the reader’s expectations when approaching fiction compared to non-fiction, and what these texts highlight about identity and representation. Assignments will include a mix of literary analysis and creative work. Possible readings include works by James Baldwin, Maggie Nelson, Carmen Maria Machado, Elena Ferrante, and Kazuo Ishiguro.
