Hollywood Cinema: Genre and the Studio System
Farrah Hersh

Hollywood Cinema: This class focuses on the “dream factories,” Hollywood’s Classic Studio System between 1927-1967. Readings, presentations, and paper topics will be organized around specific studios, the genres they became famous for, and the individual stars and directors associated with those studios. The class will center around three important elements of film studies: aesthetics, history and culture. You will also learn about film cycles, which are specific patterns that emerge within genres, illuminating the relationship between gender and genre in film. At certain times we will go beyond the class system and look at the contemporary and controversial studios including Miramax and A24.
