LIT 3313 Summer 2023 Boyles

This course will examine cyberpunk from a craft perspective. Time will be equally divided between two foundational works in the genre, Neuromancer and Snow Crash. We will examine the story mechanics of these novels (acute tension, chronic tension, collision, plot, escalation, stakes, setting, mood, direct characterization, indirect characterization, POV, voice, dramatic and thematic questions) and use them to track the evolution of the cyberpunk genre. Every other Sunday you'll submit a reading journal discussing your observations. At the end of it all, you'll write a 2,000-word craft essay on a sci-fi novel of your choosing
