Topics in English: Nonfiction from Michel de Montaigne to Hua Hsu

In this course we will study nonfiction as a literary form, memoir, literary journalism, and essays (among other varieties). We will consider early forms of the genre in the 17th century and proceed through the centuries with work by authors such as Thoreau, Orwell, Woolf, Capote, Hurston, Didion, Baldwin and others.
Requirements: This course fulfills the requirement for coursework in the following Area of Concentration: a Literary Genre (Nonfiction) and post-1900 Literary and Cultural Studies.
