Kudzu Review hosts Valentine’s fundraiser Feb. 15 at The Bark
By Bella Bozied
The Kudzu Review’s Valentine’s fundraiser on Feb. 15 at The Bark will be an open mic event, welcoming any and all artists to attend and share their work. In addition, members of Kudzu will be selling various baked goods, tarot card readings will be offered, and there will be live music.
The Bark is known for its artistic and exploratory atmosphere. The venue hosts events such as drag shows, arts and crafts activities, and regular literary readings to promote Florida State University organizations.
“If you want to engage with the Tallahassee writing community in any capacity, it's fun to come to The Bark,” says Maddie Paskow, the editor in chief of The Kudzu Review. “It's really a great way to immerse yourself in the Tallahassee writing community.”
Paskow, who is an FSU senior in the English-Creative Writing Program, says she enjoys how exciting the journal’s fundraisers are in revving up the sense of community they build.
The upcoming fundraiser is to support the print production of the Spring 2023, No. 70 issue. The publication focuses on the creative and unique perspective shown through literature and art.
“I think it's very exciting for undergraduate students to be published in print because it's so hard to be published period as an undergraduate,” Paskow says. “It's such an exciting and big deal for people.”
The importance of fundraising for a tangible issue, she adds, is that the final version, “puts [people] on the trajectory of wanting to keep writing and wanting to keep making art and getting published.”
The Kudzu Review’s Valentine’s fundraiser begins at 7 p.m. at The Bark, 507 All Saints Drive, just off Railroad Avenue, between the FSU and Florida A&M University campuses. Join the Kudzu team for these reasons: romantic poetry & swoon-worthy stories; tarot readings by English Professor Celia Caputi; Valentine’s desserts and refreshments; vintage & handmade items; blind-date-with-a-book; merchandise from local coffee shops; poems-on-demand by Kudzu's poetry section; and other activities.
