Studies in U.S. Literature to 1875

This course concentrates on some of the Big Beasts of American Literature, including Poe, Hawthorne and Melville. We’ll read deeply and slowly, looking at ways works such as “The Fall of the House of Usher,” The Scarlet Letter, and Moby-Dick continue to shape and shake writing today. Students may produce either a scholarly article on some aspect of 19th century American writing or a creative project which can be poetry, fiction, or nonfiction.

Requirements: This course fulfills the general literature requirement for one course 1660-1900. It also satisfies the requirement for coursework in the following Area of Concentration: American Literary and Cultural Studies to 1900; or a Literary Genre (Fiction).
