ENC 4404 Fiscus Spring 2022
The purpose of this course is to prepare you for designing documents, writing content, and copy-editing: three areas of expertise that you might take in future careers. We will begin the semester with an overview of design principles, so that you can create realistic replicas of the genres that your future careers use. Then, we will learn the basics to media writing—using linguistic discrimination and political correctness as our topic of inquiry—and finish the semester with an introduction to media editing. Along the way, we will use our newfound knowledge of prescriptivism to situate our discussion and practice of media writing and editing. In this course, I aim to give you plenty of opportunities to work as an individual on projects that you are interested in, while also giving opportunities for you to practice realistic simulations of workplace writing, which inevitably involves coordinating with others. My hope is that you not only learn the content of the course, but also consider how you might apply these skills in future careers.
