GLO hosts two-day conference “Reconfiguring Digital Spaces"
By Alyssa Cuevas
Florida State University’s Graduate Literature Organization hosts a virtual two-day conference, “Reconfiguring Digital Spaces,” beginning Friday, April 8, and ending April 9.
“GLO is focused on graduate student community building and professionalization in a casual, friendly environment across graduate cohorts and beyond,” says Daniel Raschke, a doctoral candidate in English-Literature, Media, and Culture and chairperson of GLO. “We’re planning one graduate conference and other minor events throughout the academic year, usually in coordination with the Literature, Media, and Culture program.”
The conference will feature speakers from across the globe, including a keynote address from Dominic Pettman, professor of media and new humanities at the New School for Social Research in New York City. Pettman’s keynote, “The Digital Gaze: On Emerging Networked Attention Ecologies,” is scheduled for Friday at 2 p.m.
All events are open to graduate students and take place on Zoom.
Pettman specializes in the study of Media and New Humanities. He is the author of the “unofficial” Eros and Ecology trilogy: Peak Libido: Sex, Ecology, and the Collapse of Desire (2020); Sonic Intimacy: Voice, Species, Technics (or, How To Listen to the World), (2017); and Creaturely Love: How Desire Makes Us More and Less Than Human. Pettman has taught at a variety of universities worldwide including the American University of Paris, the University of Melbourne, the University of Geneva, and the University of Amsterdam.
Sessions on Saturday feature speakers from the Indian Institute of Technology, the University of Manchester, Villanova University, the University of Florida, and FSU. The conference sessions relate to digital media, including a Global Fandoms session, a Digital Cultures session, a Screening Cultures session, a Gaming Analyses session, and an Undergraduate panel. Saturday’s conference schedule takes place on from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a lunch break from 1 to 1:30.
“We're most excited about connecting with people from all over the world, as we have presenters not only from the U.S. but also from India and the United Kingdom,” Raschke says. “We look forward to seeing all the various directions the scholars will be taking our topic, ‘Reconfiguring Digital Spaces.’ In general, we’re also very excited to give promising young scholars and undergraduates a chance to present their work alongside our graduate papers.”
