In this course, students study women writers, editors, readers, and/or the portrayal of women in literary texts. This section will focus on queer femininity and ask students to deeply consider the category of “woman.” The course is structured in units exploring facets of womanhood and femininity through texts by queer and transgender authors and filmmakers. Students should expect to read fiction and memoir from figures such as Emily Austin, Joshua Whitehead, Rivers Solomon, Octavia Butler, and Torrey Peters. We will consider all primary texts alongside theory and criticism on the conditions of womanhood. This course fulfills the following requirements: Exploring the Human Exp, State-mandated Writing (W credit), and LMC Diversity.
