Introduction to Literature
Jenna Albergo

In this course, students will engage with a broad range of literary genres (including, but not limited to, the novel, the short story, and the poem) across a variety of literary movements from the Shakespearean era to the present. This course will examine how works of literature reflect and respond to the historical eras in which they were crafted, and will attend to how formal and stylistic features are strategically employed by writers to produce meaning. Further, this course aims to support students in developing critical thinking, interpretation, writing, and analytical skills through reading, discussing, and responding to a wide selection of texts from the Western canon (and beyond). To achieve this end, students will also learn about the key terms and methodologies of literary studies and be provided with numerous opportunities to practice critical interpretation and written analysis of literary works. Ultimately, LIT 2000 provides a groundwork in literary types for non-majors and is also strongly recommended as preparation for upper-level (3000- or 4000-level) coursework in the field.
