CRW3311 - Fall 2025 - Wilhelm
Regarding the lyric poem, Nick Blount tells us that “the lyric tries the impossible, it tries to temporarily stop time.” In this class, students will have the opportunity not only to study elements of poetic technique but also to write poetry regularly and receive feedback on their writing. We will close read, discuss, and draw inspiration from a wide variety of contemporary poets whose work may inform our own. Aided by generative prompts and weekly workshops, each student will create a portfolio of original work. Together, we will develop our critical acumen while investigating what—for ourselves and for other poets—makes a poem sing, tick, or, maybe, stop time.
