This course examines the canon of (primarily) American film from the silent era to the present. We will examine major additions to this canon, attending to their technological innovation, aesthetic achievement, and lingering sociocultural significance. Along the way, we will learn and use the vocabulary of academic film theory, including but not limited to montage, apparatus, auteur, media, genre, spectacle, psychoanalytic, Marxist, feminist, queer, critical race, and postcolonial theories. Fulfills Understanding Genres requirement.
