ENG 3114
Film Adaptation
Hank Nooney

This course examines the interaction of film and literary texts. During the semester we will consider what happens when short stories, novels, or plays are made into a film, breaking from the concept of fidelity to create a space to explore how the cinema engages with literature, and how literary stories are deformed and reformed through the medium of film. This course will explore cinematic adaptations through surveying the translation of “hardboiled” detective fiction into noir and neo-noir films such as Double Indemnity and Blade Runner.
