Article & Essay Technique: Reading and Writing Narrative and Creative Nonfictions
River Selby

Nonfiction is one of the most versatile and dynamic of all the writing genres, including fiction and poetry. In this class, we'll explore a diverse range of creative and narrative nonfiction works, including personal and lyric essays, journalism, memoir, nature writing, humor, and biographies. Students will develop a clear understanding of point of view, ethics, pacing, temporal arrangement, voice, and structuring. We'll address questions of memory, perspective, and the elusive concept of objectivity while reading writers both living and long dead. Expect to be challenged and affirmed in your understanding of the world itself, and to expand your ideas of what writing can accomplish. Students will also create and workshop their nonfiction works in a positive, helpful environment. This workshop is as important for learning the craft of nonfiction as the readings.
