ENC3416
Writing and Editing for Print and Online (WEPO)

This course is one of three core courses for Editing, Writing, Media (EWM), and as such it helps provide a foundation for the major. This course treats writing as a social and rhetorical act--not just what a text says, but who it's written for, where it will circulate, and what it's meant to do once it gets there. We'll explore the principles of composing and editing across different media environments, paying close attention to how a text's audience and purpose shift as it moves from print to screen to network, and what that means for the choices we make as writers and editors. Students will: 1) understand principles of composition and rhetoric across composing spaces; 2) compose for three spaces--print (physical), digital (screen), and network (online)--using different technologies and design strategies; 3) revise and edit texts appropriately as they move between spaces; and 4) understand how a text's audience, context, and purpose shape--and are shaped by--the space it circulates in. Much of this work is grounded in real audiences: projects are built to actually reach and work on the people they're written for, often in partnership with local organizations. Work culminates in a digital portfolio showcasing your texts and your evolving thinking about composing across spaces. No official textbook; readings via Canvas.
This course fulfills the EWM major's core requirement and the Upper-Division Writing requirement.
