LIT3112 – Spring 2027 – Maurette

LIT3112, History of English Literature I, traces the development of English literature from the Old English poem The Battle of Maldon to Jonathan Swift’s A Modest Proposal. Across this broad historical and literary period, students encounter some of the most influential writers and works in the English canon, including Julian of Norwich, Edmund Spenser, Christopher Marlowe, John Donne, and many others. Through close reading and historical contextualization, the course examines changing literary forms, genres, styles, and ideas, while considering how literature responds to religious, political, philosophical, and social transformations. The course offers a foundational survey of English literary history.
This is a required course for LMC majors.
