Intorduction to Literature

In this course, students will read John Steinbeck's East of Eden across the full semester as the class's central text, using sustained engagement with a single long novel to build close-reading, discussion, and analytical skills. To ensure a broad range of literary genres, historical eras, and cultural contexts, the novel will be supplemented with one representative work each in short fiction, poetry, and nonfiction. Students will write analyses of literary works and will have opportunities to practice critical interpretation. The course will help students identify a variety of literary movements, historical eras and/or cultural contexts as well as demonstrate critical thinking and analytical skills.
This course is an approved CoreFSU course and fulfills the State-Mandated Writing (W) requirement.
