Renaissance Drama
Shakespeare was part of a thriving community of writers in a new media environment: commercial live secular entertainment, dependent on privately-owned theatres with paid admission and a very rapid turnover of new plays, which created high demand for new scripts. This course most important rivals and collaborators were Christopher Marlowe, Ben Jonson, Thomas Middleton, and "Anonymous". This course will focus on some of the most famous and influential plays from these writers.
