ENG3014 – Spring 2027 – Sperling

While there are many, much older places and times in which one might start in the broad study of "theory," this course will operate as a survey of largely 20th and 21st century texts that make up the so-called "canon" of theory, beginning with Russian Formalism and New Criticism, on to Phenomenology, Structuralism and Post-Structuralism, Psychoanalysis, Marxism and Critical Theory, Gender Studies and Queer Theory, Ethnic Studies, Post-Colonial and Decolonial Studies, Ecocriticism and other theories of Posthumanism. The course is organized around a (free online through FSU) anthology, fiction, as well as supplemental essays and film.
