AML4121 – Spring 2027 – Franklin

American Novels will explore the term "American" and the idea of what it means for a work to be an "American novel." We will study the current events taking place in the timeline of the fictions when the novels were written. The course is discussion based and usually covers five novels per semester. Texts in the past have included, and future semesters may include these novels and others: Dune, A Visit from the Goon Squad, Middlesex, The Secret History, The Underground Railroad, Catcher in the Rye, Demon Copperhead, The Handmaid's Tale.
