AML 4261 – Spring 2027 – Roberts

No American can escape our history, but Southern writers have an acute awareness of how the past continues to warp the present. We will explore a variety of texts from and about the South, with special attention to how Southern writers confront race and gender to illuminate how the United States continues to struggle with the past. Students will be expected to read and comprehend at a very high level (this is an advanced course and will be taught as such), and produce sophisticated, erudite, clear, and intellectually-rigorous writing.

For the English Major, this course satisfies the 4000-level course requirement and the "Understanding Genres" requirement.
