Rhetoric:Tracing Past to Present
Sophia Ziemer

How do we trace rhetorical theory and its study? Some claim it begins with Aristotle, yet our contemporary concept of rhetoric likely existed centuries before according to other geographical traditions. This course will attempt to carefully survey rhetorical theory from its different origins, trying to understand how it has evolved over time. It is nearly impossible to do a true survey of rhetorical theory within the course of a semester. However, we will do our best with a general understanding that there will be lots of gaps. Using themes and chronology, we will read to focus around class discussions and assignments to ask you, the students, to try and fill these gaps. Finally, readings are meant to provide insights on the different ideas explored regarding rhetoric from the ancient traditions to contemporary rhetorical theories.
