Poetry Workshop: The Situationship
Cy Weise

This course is primarily focused on workshop. It is a fast-paced, fun course. You will write poems at least once a week, possibly twice a week, and receive feedback from everyone in the class. It’s a great class if you’re self-motivated and self-disciplined and really want to work on your book. The theme for the course is: The Situationship. I am still learning this word from each of you and younger generations. I would like to propose three books that have situationships in them: 1) John Hollander’s Reflections on Espionage; 2) Ansel Elkins’ Blue Yodel; and 3) Cat Fitzpatrick’s The Call Out: A Novel in Rhyme. I teach this class as a community of writers, so your concerns matter to me. The first week of class is dedicated to making sure our classroom is accessible to us and that we have clear expectations for workshop. Join us if you want to write a lot of poems, learn about some poets in some situationships, and gossip about po-biz.

For MFA students, this course satisfies 3 of the required 12-15 hours of writing workshops. For PhD students, it counts toward the 27 hours of required coursework. This course also meets the Alterity requirement.
