AML 3311-0001 - Fall 2026 - Kilgore
This is a summer course devoted to Herman Melville’s classic sea tale, Moby-Dick: or, The Whale. Most basically, it will provide you the opportunity to carefully read and analyze one of the greatest but most challenging novels ever written in a dynamic classroom setting. In so doing, we will foreground the grand theme of the novel as indicated by its title: the whale. By that I mean we will explore and educate ourselves about the life, culture, and environment of whales, “Earth’s most awesome creatures,” and let that be our inspiration for reading Melville’s masterpiece. The course will also devote time to popular representations of Moby-Dick, both the novel and the whale, in other genres, including film, comics, and visual art.
