21st-Century Scripts: Screenwriting With Conscience
L. Lamar Wilson

This class introduces students to scriptwriting texts and techniques, particularly adaptation of original or existing/found texts in other forms beyond the page. Through the study of exemplary models of scriptwriting, students will become familiar with the conventions, genres, and strategies of various modes of screenwriting, including but not limited to podcasting, situation comedy, and documentary and feature film. Along the way, we will ponder the ethics of creating images on screen that are cognizant of their capacity to influence audiences as we embrace the social responsibility of crafting meaningful screenplays that make powerful statements while entertaining, winning over, and bringing together a range of audiences. This course fulfills Upper-Division Writing requirements.
