Introduction to Fiction: American Writers of the 20th Century
Neal Hammons
This course introduces students to such narrative elements as point of view, characterization, setting, and symbolism in prose fiction and provides an introduction to the basic approaches of literary analysis. The course will engage with basic concepts of major literary theories, such as structuralism, psychoanalytic criticism, and postmodernism. Most of our texts will be American short stories and novels from the early 20th century to the present by authors such as Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Zora Neale Hurston, J. D. Salinger, Ralph Ellison, Don DeLillo, Philip Roth, Toni Morrison, Thomas Pynchon, and Cormac McCarthy.
