Literature of the American South: The Southern Gothic
Diane Roberts
Southern literature is full of haunted houses, haunted minds, curses, and ghosts both real and imagined. Is slavery America’s Original Sin? Are we imprisoned in our own history? In this course, we’ll explore how and why. Students will be expected to read and comprehend at a very high level (this is an advanced course and will be taught as such) and produce sophisticated, erudite, clear, and intellectually-rigorous writing. Authors to be studied may include Edgar Allan Poe, William Faulkner, Angelina Grimké, Ralph Ellison, Randall Kenan and others. Meets the requirements for 4000+ and genre courses.
