Fall 2020 alumna spotlight

Jordan Schwartz

Major concentration: Creative Writing
Hometown: Miami, FL

How did you decide on English-EWM as your major?

I chose English creative writing as my major because I loved to write, and I loved English. The major was perfect for me.

What was your favorite part about being an English major?

My favorite part about being an English major is the community. Once I started to get older, a lot of my classes were with the same people, which made sharing my work and learning more comfortable.

What one memory of your time at FSU do you think I’ll always remember?

My favorite memories at FSU would be the times I spent with Seminole Tap Troupe. Dancing with the team was always an incredible stress relief and so much fun!

What was your Honors in the Major project and how was the process for you?

My Honors thesis chronicles my family's Shoah survival. I interviewed my aunt last spring and then spent all of summer and fall documenting their survival in a short novel.

What would you tell a student who is considering English as their major?

I would tell the person considering English as their major to do it! All the professors are incredible, our class sizes are smaller than most, and we have the best advisors on campus! (No, this is not sponsored.) Also, everyone needs a good writer.

What are your post-graduation plans?

I will be working for Teach for America in Miami, Florida, as a secondary English teacher after graduation!
