"I'd encourage EWM majors to consider at least two things re: their academic careers: 1) course content (what they'll learn) and 2) course outcomes (what they'll be able to do). Both are important in different degrees depending what students hope to do after their undergraduate education. This, then, ties into the kinds of knowledges and skills that are required at the next level, whether that be for graduate schools or the variety of careers for which EWM prepares students.
--I'd also encourage students to think beyond today and even tomorrow and project forward to the types of study and work they may be doing years from now. Academic settings and structures change as do career possibilities in editing, writing, and media. If all of our attention is focused on what we look like right now and what specific skill sets are needed to succeed right now, we may not imagine ways we can be continuously learning in order to stay relevant and productive for years to come.
--Finally, I'd encourage EWM students to think about ways to bring together different disciplinary and extracurricular experiences together in their writing projects. Some of the most interesting student work I've seen so far from students comes from their varied interests and work that might initially seem less connected to English. These lived experiences can be the basis for exploration and inquiry that might lead to productive avenues for their writing and editing projects." --Dr. Michael Neal, Visual Rhetoric
