A number of students were honored at the English Department Awards Ceremony on April 14, 2008.
In the undergraduate division:
- Kelly Scherwitzki won the Cody Harris Allen Award, with five finalists also being named: Ryan Clary, Dana De Greff, Somerset Greer, Cassie Schmitz, Jimin Seo.
- First place for The John Mackay Shaw Academy of American Poets Undergraduate Award went to Thomas Frobisher, with honorable mentions going to Lauren Birden and Somerset Greer.
- The winner of the George Yost Award for Best Undergradutate Personal Essay was Kristen McNair.
- The Mart and Louis Hill Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Honors Thesis winners were Jonathan dean, Sarah Boulos, and Schuyler Velasco
- The Fred L. Standley Award for Undergraduate Excellence in English winners were Jonathon Dean and Eileen Reynolds.
- Bess Ward Travel Award winners were Alexander Heath and Jonathon Dean.
- Alexander Heath is also a “Meeting of the Minds” Conference Attendee.
- The Sassman Fund Undergraduate Creative Writing Award went to Thomas Frobisher.
- The George M. Harper Outstanding Undergraduate Critical Essay Award went to Jaclyn Bitsis.
From the first year writing classes;
- Natalie Symanski won the Bryan Hall Award.
- Brett Smith was the first place winner of the James M. McCrimmon Freshman Essay Award, with honorable mentions going to Susannah Hall and Megan Johnson.
In the graduate division for writing:
- First place for the The John Mackay Shaw Academy of American Poets Graduate Award went to Frank Giampietro, with honorable mentions going to Kara Candito, and Trevor Newberry
- The Ann Durham Award for Outstanding Creative Writing by and MFA Student was awarded to Katie Burgess.
- The Bertram and Ruth Davis Dissertation Award in English Literature and Criticism was awarded to Maxwell Wheeler.
- The Russell J. Reaver Dissertation Award in American Literature was awarded to Tiffany Brooks.
- The Sassman Fund Graduate Creative Writing Award winner was Evan Peterson.
- The George M. Harper Outstanding Graduate Critical Essay Award winner was Steve Kistulentz.
In the graduate division for teaching:
- Matt Hobson won the Marion Bashinski Award.
- Sarah Grieve wont the Fred L. Standley Award.
- Toby McCall won the Robert O. Lawton Award.
Kingsbury Fellowships were awarded by the English Department to Raechel Dumas and Johann Pautz in Humanities, to Lucy Littler in Literature, to Casey TerHorst in Biology, to Steve Kistulentz in Creative Writing, and Jennifer Henderson in History.
